Case Study: The Olive Branch Restaurant

When it comes to screening food preparation areas against insects, you need a solution that offers complete protection whilst still being functional and easy to maintain. DIY fly screens can offer exactly that.

Our screens were recently installed at the Olive Branch, a nationally renowned country pub in Clipsham, Rutland, who wanted to be able to screen their kitchen door and window in compliance with the Food Standards Agency’s (FSA) hygiene regulations.

FSA Guidelines state that, “Windows and other openings (e.g. doors) that can be opened onto the outside must be fitted, where necessary, with insect-proof screens that can be removed easily for cleaning.” DIY fly screens offered an excellent solution as they provide maximum protection from insects and can be completely removed from the door or window for cleaning before being re-attached.

The fly screens were ordered and cut to the exact measurement required meaning that, when they were delivered to the Olive Branch, all they needed to do was click the four sides together and stick the screens directly onto the window and door frames using the self-adhesive strips.

The fly screen cassette forms a complete seal between the frame and the mesh so that no insects can sneak in around the edges. Plus, the retractable design means that the mesh rolls back into the housing when the screens aren’t in use, keeping it clean and protected from accidental damage and wear-and-tear - ideal for busy commercial kitchens.

The uPVC frames and mesh are easy to wipe down for general cleaning and when it’s time for deep cleaning, the screens can be removed completely from the window, and taken apart if necessary, before being re-attached with new adhesive tape.

DIY fly screens have provided an effective pest control solution that is both practical and effective and staff at the Olive Branch have been very happy with the products so far. Proprietor Sean Hope commented: “We’re really pleased. In addition to keeping out flies, the screen have allowed us to get a cooling draft through the kitchen. The door screen is easier for our chefs to use than traditional chain curtains, which tend to wrap around whatever you’re carrying and the window screen even helps to shade from the low evening sun.”
